Baylor University and Tarleton State University are excited to bring to Waco a series of free, public lectures concerning the art of photography the weekend of October 13-15, 2017. These events are part of the 2017 Society for Photographic Education’s South Central Regional Conference (SPESC). This year’s theme is called THIS, THAT, or The OTHER: Considering the Emerging Trends and Vernacular in Photography. It is sponsored by a partnership of Baylor University and Tarleton State University.  These events are also free to the public due to the support of grants from Texas Humanities, and the Texas Photographic Society.

The first free, public lecture will be featuring photographers Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison on October 13, 4:30pm to 6:30pm at the Jones Theater in the Hooper-Schaeffer Fine Arts Center at Baylor University.   Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison are a husband and wife duo who have been making photographs together for almost 20 years. Their work focuses on the relationship between humans and the environment.
The ParkeHarrisons’ work can be found in over 20 prestigious museum collections, and their book The Architect’s Brother was named one of the ten best photography books by the New York Times in 2000.

The second free public lecture will be on Saturday, October 14th from 7:00 to 9 pm and will feature Charlotte Cotton. This lecture will also take place at the Jones Theater in the Hooper-Schaeffer Fine Arts Center at Baylor University. Charlotte Cotton is a curator, writer and creative consultant who has explored photographic culture for over twenty years. She has held positions including curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum, head of programming at The Photographers’ Gallery in London and the curator, head of the Wallis Annenberg Department of Photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and curator-in-residence at the International Center of Photography, NY. Her book, The Photograph as Contemporary Art, is published in ten languages and has been a key text in its charting of the rise of photography as an undisputed art form in the 21st century.

All events are free and open to the public.  If you have any questions, please write them to Chris Ireland at Ireland@tarleton.edu
