CALL TO ARTISTS: “Mayjoring in Art; Higher Learning” is a juried exhibition with the mission of celebrating the creativity and ingenuity of emerging young artists from colleges and universities around Texas. Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning or have graduated with in the last 6 months. We are seeking quality work with originality in all mediums including oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolors, prints, drawings, sculpture, fiber art, mixed media, installation, photography, video art, and digital art with no size restrictions. This year’s juror is Daniel Blagg

Job Opportunity: Graphic Designer at Texas Legislative Council

The Texas Legislative Council is seeking candidates for a Web Assistant (Graphic Designer). I have attached the job descriptions and they will also be posted in Hire a Texan. See below for qualifications for each position.

Web Assistant (Graphic Designer)


  • 2 years’ experience and satisfactory performance in desktop publishing or production art.
  • 2 years of college-level graphics-related courses or equivalent.
  • Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to analyze and present data stories in a clear, concise manner.
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into compelling visuals.
  • Ability to respond to rapidly changing pace and workload and cope with deadline pressures.
  • Ability to accept and incorporate feedback through multiple layers of review.
  • Solid understanding of current technologies, trends, and design principles.
  • Experience making interactive online presentations preferred.
  • Experience with Tableau, Social Explorer, Visme, or similar software a plus.

General Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Outstanding accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet project specifications and deadlines.
  • Ability to express material accurately, clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of material and information.
  • Ability to analyze and present information in an unbiased manner.

Call for entries: TSU Juried Annual Student Exhibition

Students! Apply on March 22nd for the 3rd Annual Juried Student Exhibition. This year’s juror is Dallas artist Randy Guthmiller. To apply, turn in 1-3 of your best works to FA room 162 by 5pm on March 22nd. Work must be ready to hang or be screened by a projector/TV. Please talk to the faculty if you have any questions!

Exhibition Opportunities: 500x Gallery Student Expo 2017

500x Gallery in Dallas TX is looking for Art works for this year’s Student Expo 2017! This year’s juror is Danielle Avram, gallery coordinator at Texas Woman’s University. $300 in cash prizes will be awarded to selected artists! Student Expo 2017 will be on view from February 18 – March 12, 2017. The opening reception is February 18th from 7-10pm.

Student Opportunities: Tarleton Student Publications

(from Tarleton web page) Graphic Designers are responsible for creating marketing materials for the Department of Student Publications and the Division of Student Affairs. The person in this position will work cross-departmentally to aid with marketing campaigns that may include design of banners, brochures, flyers, posters, logos, advertisements, social media graphics, and various other publications or graphics. Job Duties include (but not limited to):

  • Developing marketing campaign ideas to promote Student Affairs programs and services;
  • Creating design projects that specifically meet the needs of the clients (Student Affairs departments and organizations);
  • Working with the Student Publications Graduate Assistants to promote events/activities for the department and the division;
  • Designing advertisements for JTAC News that meet the specifications of the advertiser;
  • Working with the Video Production Manager to develop graphics or images for use in videos;
  • Taking photos or coordinating photo shoots for use in Student Affairs publications;
  • Writing and editing copy for publications;
  • Maintaining and organizing all current projects in the department’s project management system;
  • Meeting deadlines as prescribed by the Director of Student Publications;
  • Working with the university’s Marketing and Communication Office to ensure that all university graphic and branding standards are met and adhered to;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Publications or the Student Affairs Marketing Coordinator.

The desired candidate should possess strong project management skills, be self-motivated, require little to no supervision, be able to work in a collaborative environment and be able to maintain client relationships. The candidate should also be advanced in design software such as Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, etc.).

  • 1-2 years of experience in a related position
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Exhibit good office etiquette
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Exhibit good interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate good customer service skills, both internal and external

Call for Entries: SXSW Exhibitions

SXSW, LLC seeks proposals from professional visual artists or artist teams to loan existing artwork to be displayed throughout SXSW exhibitions March10-18. Exhibitions are located in the Austin Convention Center, Palmer Event Center, JW Marriott and Hilton Downtown Austin. The intent for the temporary art exhibition is to spotlight artists from across central Texas, cultivate curiosity, spark imagination, and engage SXSW registrants in a meaningful dialogue about Austin’s local art.

Multiple commissions will be awarded. The budget for artwork ranges from $250 to $500 for each artwork. The selected artist(s) will be responsible for development of a budget to include all necessary aspects of design, fabrication and construction including design and permitting, travel expenses, insurance, installation costs, foundation or bases, and any issues around the piece as part of installation or de-installation.
