TSU Fine Arts Gallery – The Real Thing

Opening this week, “The Real Thing” is a group exhibition that brings together the work of artists Christopher Bond, Kristen Cochran, Randy Guthmiller, and Luke Harnden. These artists share a commonality in approaching painting as physical objects that carry references the world around them and the history of art.

Bond’s works are constructions derived from the 19th century realist Thomas Eakins, Cochran’s works are built from the fragments of studio production of other artists, Guthmiller’s works point towards mid-century modernism and Color Field painting, and Harnden’s works are built with manual processes to produce imagery that can appear digital and reference Op Art.

Bond is a founding member of the collective Homecoming! Committee and received a degree from Texas Christian University, Cochran has exhibited her work internationally and holds a degree from Southern Methodist University, Guthmiller is the founder of Shape Zines and received a degree from Hampshire College, Harnden is a founding member of the collective Beefhaus and received a degree from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Visiting artist Alex Emmons cyanotype workshop with Design 1 students

Thank you visiting artist Alex Emmons for a great day workshopping with Tarleton’s Design 1 students. The students were given a crash course in 19th century photographic processes and made their own cyanotype photograms using some chemistry and the Texas sun.
